Product Description

Sodium perborate is a white, free-flowing crystalline compound soluble in water. As a stable, solid source of active oxygen, it exists in anhydrous, mono, tri, and tetrahydrate forms, with the mono and tetrahydrate forms being commercially significant.

The tetrahydrate is prepared from disodium tetraborate pentahydrate, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hydroxide. While not as soluble as the monohydrate or as stable at higher temperatures, sodium perborate monohydrate can be easily prepared by heating the tetrahydrate.

Applications

Sodium perborate is commonly used as an active ingredient in tooth bleaches, capable of bleaching teeth both externally and internally. When used for internal bleaching, a sodium perborate preparation is placed inside a tooth with a non-vital root, serving as both a bleaching agent and an antiseptic/disinfectant over time.
