Magnesium peroxide is a fine, odorless and tasteless white or yellowish powder. Similar to Calcium Peroxide, it is another kind of oxygen release agent which slowly decompose to generate oxygen at a "controlled" rate when in contact of hydrous media.
Decomposition occurs in a similar way when the product is suspended in water. It is of the most temperature stable inorganic peroxides. Except for its stable oxygen releasing capability, magnesium peroxide has similar functions of other peroxides such as bleaching, disinfecting, deodorizing.
In certain circumstances MgO2 has also been shown to inhibit growth of bacteria. In particular, the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria can be inhibited in an environment containing magnesium peroxide. While the oxygen slowly dissociates, it is theorized that it may then act to displace the sulfate that normally acts as the terminal electron acceptor in their electron transport chain.
Magnesium Peroxide is also useful for coating seeds for gardening and adding to sprouting seeds to improve germination and alkalise, oxygenate and sterilise the young roots as it slowly liberates hydrogen peroxide and oxygen.
Used in bioremediation as an oxygen source.
