Description:
Calcium peroxide (CaO2), as one of the solid peroxides, has been increasingly used in contaminated site remediation due to its ability to release oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Biodegradation can be enhanced by the existence of O2. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to for in situ chemical oxidation via the modified Fenton. Previous studies show inconsistent results about O2 and H2O2 release during CaO2 decomposition.
Application:
As a food additive it is used as flour bleaching agent and improving agent. Most calcium peroxide is used as a dough conditioning aid or for soil remediation (decontamination). When used in doughs, calcium peroxide is decomposed during baking. Some claim calcium peroxide is used in toothpastes as a whitener. Calcium peroxide can be used in agriculture to release oxygen into soils or as a seed pretreatment. It also stimulates the aerobic microbial degradation of hydrocarbons in contaminated groundwater and soil.
